Circumstances and situations maketh who we are

I've just finished reading 'La Prisonniere' by Malika Oufkir. I have to admit that I only picked up this book after getting a glimse of the writer on Oprah and since the book came with the Oprah's Book Club sticker. Call me vain or what ?
It took me a while to read this book as I didn't quite enjoy the writing style. But I have finished it, as I always try to when I get a new book, unless its beyond reading!
Nevertheless 'La Prisonniere' is a great book to read. It teaches one about humanity and what the human body, mind and soul can endure. About being priviledged and all that taken away just in a blink of an eye and about being locked away isolated for about 15 years..only surviving with their imagination, books and the radio .....which reminds me of the proverb :
'one man's meat is another man's poison and
'one man’s trash is another man’s treasure'
Because when you are desperate, anything goes.
Just thinking out loud...
If one day we had no money, status or even a place to call home, would we then end up being a nobody even if we were 'somebody' sometime back ? Would a stranger help us on the street or think of us as being a scavanger just because of the way we are dressed ? Even if we were educated by renouned institutions to the highest possible level but haven't got the papers with us or even identifications to prove it ?
Ehhmm.... reading the book does make me think and I guess as much as the big nations of the world are always fighting for human rights and talk about political asylum, it is not such an easy issue to contemplate when different countries are involved and their political agenda to be taken account of.
Well these were just some thoughts I had...but better considered then not I guess.
